About
Healthcare in Australia accounts for 7% of total emissions. From our seminal principle of ‘do no harm’ we act to foster stewardship of our environment and ensure our health operations are not contributing to environmental harm, which in turn contributes to a developing crisis in health.
Our Story
Climate change is a health emergency, and general practitioners have an important role in both mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change. Climate change is already impacting health in a myriad of ways, including death and illness from increasingly frequent extreme weather events, disruptions to food systems and changes in vector-borne diseases. General practice can demonstrate leadership by embracing sustainability as part of a primary care ethos aligning it with quality care.
Green Practice has a mission to connect the medical profession with purpose to support the science and change the world around us towards a sustainable future. It has been developed for GPs by GPs that have spent decades implementing sustainability in their own practice in Australia. As such, we appreciate sustainability in primary care is central to sustainability within the Healthcare sector. It also provides the basis, credibility and opportunity for advocacy to address sustainability both within and beyond the health service to allow healthier populations.
Our Vision
Our vision is a climate positive future where every community, every neighbourhood and every life is whole and healthy, and this commitment supports our efforts to build a practice-centric sustainable sector across Australia and beyond.
